So nice to see photos of my late father C/Insp George Thomas and the Police Driving School on the Web Site. I hope to visit the Museum later this year and if required could help identify some of the people in the photographs! Best wishes.

i am trying to find information on my G Grandfather Walter James Miles i am led to believe he was a special policeman in 1914 when he married in the Eynsford area

Webmaster comments   Hello Sharon.
I'm afraid we have no records for the Special Constables who served in the Kent Police up to a couple of years ago.
Specials were recruited on-station by the local recruiting sergeant, and when the officer left, for whatever reson, his/her records were destroyed.
Today the Home Office recruit all police, specials and PCSOs, so their records are now retained.
I'm so sorry we are unable to help. Best of luck with your research.

Great photo archive, the traffic and driving school photos are particularly evocative. As the son of the late INSP3142 Graham Newton I have fond memories of pretending to drive the herald chassis when I was a kid as I used to pop in to the driving school from time to time after school to see my dad. Mind you, I reserved my real love for the static display maroon Triumph Speed Twin!

What a wonderful site! I am only halfway through it, but already love it. My g.g. granddad was a police inspector during the 1800's in that area, I believe probably in the Canterbury area. I have been looking at the photo collection and find it fascinating. I shall certainly be returning again and again to the site. Brilliant!

Webmaster comments   Hi Terry,
Glad you survived the courses, some didn't!! I was probably around at the time as I was Kent Traffic for 22 years, and did all the refresher courses as well.
Keep watching as there are exciting things to happen here.

My ex father in-law was PC1937 Ernie Cutting who served most of his 25 years service as rural officer at Meopham Green. After retiring from the force having served for 25 years, Ernie worked for a year or so for Gravesham Borough Council but sadly died of leukemia aged around 58 in the mid 1970's.

Ernies younger brother Frank Cutting (also now deceased) also served in the Kent Country Constabulary attaining the rank of Inspector and served at Canterbury in the 1950's, 60's & early 1970's.

Webmaster comments   Hi Roger,
many thanks for the comments. We are always happy to know of our former members, sad though that Ernie never got to really enjoy his retirement.
If you have any police related photos, or other items, the museum would be pleased to receive them, even if only to copy the pictures, before their return to you.

I joined the Kent County Constabulary in October 1969 as PC 4461. I attended No 6 PTC at Sandgate and my course was 249. I was then stationed at Gravesend (believe it or not . my home town . not nice!!!!!!) until 1972 until transfering to Burham (A Division rural beat sub-division station being West Malling).

I believe that i was the last "village policeman" in Burham. I resigned from the force in 1973 & have been a professional musician ever since.

I really enjoyed my time in the force and reckon I'd do it all over again if I had the chance to do so.
